- Over 30 years of experience in water resources and flood management projects, both in the Netherlands and internationally
- Lived and worked for many years in Southeast Asia (mostly Indonesia and Vietnam), where he focused on regional water management issues
- Involved in many water management and flood mitigation projects internationally, including the United States (upper Mississippi River basin, New Orleans, Mississippi Delta, and Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta)
- Played a leading role in several feasibility and public policy studies in the Netherlands related to mitigating current and expected future flooding risks. Among these was the “Room for the River” study, which set a new course for national flood risk management policy in the Netherlands
- Served as a member of the independent Dutch National Advisory Committee on Flood Management Issues
- Served as international member of Committee on New Orleans Regional Hurricane Protection Projects, Established after Hurricane Katrina (U.S. National Academy of Engineering and U.S. National Research Council
- Project leader for a large Dutch consortium hired by the U.S. Army Corps to prepare a “Dutch perspective” on flood risk reduction and landscape stabilization for coastal Louisiana
